Indigo Workshop

Mendocino Art Center.

Explore the magic and mystery of indigo, one of the oldest and most influential dyes. Set up a natural indigo dye bath using a simple ecological formula suitable for home studio use. Examine indigo textiles from around the world. Learn basic indigo dyeing procedures and resist techniques on various different fiber samples. Prepare cloth for resist dyeing and experiment in various techniques creating some useful textiles for your home. On Day Two, create small vials of thickened indigo for direct application (painting and stamping). Learn the history of these techniques and create more textiles for your home. Work on a silk scarf combining painting and dyeing. Explore indigo on paper and multi-colored “penciling” effects. Students may complete a personal project with the remaining indigo on cotton, bast fibers, or appropriate basketry materials.
